How to Play EverRail Multiplayer: A Complete Guide to Co-op Survival
Learn how to start and survive in EverRail multiplayer co-op. Setup, train management, expedition tips, and common pitfalls for up to 4 players.
Overview
EverRail is an open-world survival crafting game set on the frozen exomoon Inara. You command a train that serves as your mobile base, and you can play solo or in online co-op with up to 4 players. The core loop involves driving the train, stopping at procedurally generated points of interest (POIs) to scavenge resources, fight hostile robots, craft gear, and rescue passengers. Every passenger is a life – when you die, a passenger replaces you, and if you run out of passengers or the train’s battery dies, the game ends.
This guide covers everything you need to start and survive in EverRail multiplayer, from setting up a session to executing successful expeditions as a team. We’ll also highlight common mistakes and advanced tips based on early gameplay footage and official information.
Requirements
- Game purchase: EverRail is available on Steam for $14.99 (introductory price). It is an Early Access title released July 20, 2026.
- Platform: Windows 10/11 (64-bit) with minimum specs (Intel i7-8700K / Ryzen 7 2700X, 16 GB RAM, GTX 1660 / RX 5600 XT, 30 GB storage). Recommended specs are higher.
- Online co-op: Requires an internet connection. Players can join via Steam friends or invites. A dedicated server is not mentioned; co-op is presumably via Steam matchmaking or direct invites.
- Voice chat: Not built-in as confirmed; use third-party apps like Discord.
- Per-player progression: The game saves your train and survivors per session. Joining a friend’s game will use that host’s world state.
Steps to Play with Friends
1. Start or Join a Multiplayer Session
- Launch EverRail and select Multiplayer from the main menu.
- Host a game: Choose “Create Game” or “Host Co-op” (exact wording may vary). Set a session name or privacy (friends only / public). The host’s train and world will be used.
- Join a game: Select “Join Game” to see a list of friend-hosted sessions or use Steam invite system. You can join at any point – the train will already be moving.
- Synchronize game seed: If you want the same procedural world, both players must use the same world seed (entered at difficulty selection). The host can share the seed.
2. Understand Your Roles
- Train driver: Controls speed, brakes, and track switches. Only one player can be in the driver’s seat at a time.
- Expeditioners: Leave the train to explore POIs, scavenge, fight, and rescue survivors. They must return before the train’s battery drains (train battery depletes while stationary and recharges while moving).
- Crafters/builders: Use the train’s workstations (synthesizer, weapon fabricator, glider fabricator, etc.) to create gear, ammo, and upgrades while the train moves.
- Passenger manager: Keep the food depot stocked – each passenger consumes one ration per distribution interval. Starving passengers reduce your total lives.
3. First Co-op Run (Step-by-Step)
- After the prologue (escape the starting facility), the train begins its journey. Communicate who will drive and who will manage the train interior.
- Driver: Learn the controls:
- W/S to increase/decrease target speed.
- Q to apply/release brakes (three levels). Fully press Q three times to disengage brakes.
- A/D to switch tracks at junctions.
- Keep the speed in the green zone; exceeding it on curves causes derailment damage.
- Expeditioners: When you stop at a POI (question mark on map), leave the train via the side doors. You automatically wear your exo-suit. Watch the train battery timer – the train will explode if it reaches zero. Aim to return with at least 2–3 minutes to spare.
- Loot and fight: Use your starting pistol (Sto 0) and scrapper tool. Scrapper has limited durability. Headshots deal more damage. Shielded enemies require EMP weapons; craft EMP pistol at weapon fabricator later.
- Return to train: Board the moving train using the rear entrance. Re-enter the driver’s seat or start crafting while someone else drives.
- Manage hunger and health: Eat field rations (green food) to reduce hunger and heal. The cold meter also depletes outside – stay inside the train to warm up.
4. Scaling Up
- Build more train cars with the building tool (hotbar slot 2) to add workstations, storage, and glider facilities.
- Craft a glider (requires glider fabricator and 4 scrap metal). Gliders allow scouting and collecting isotope wisps (purple orbs). Launch from the glider launcher on top of the train. Beware: glider crashes cause death and loss of a passenger.
- Upgrade weapons: The weapon fabricator lets you craft Sto 1 pistols and later EMP weapons. EMP weapons strip shields from turrets and shielded robots.
Recommended Setup and Resources
- Roles: Split tasks – one designated driver, one primary looter, one crafter. Rotate if needed.
- Prioritize: Food (rations) above all else. The train’s food depot must be kept stocked; otherwise passengers starve and you lose lives.
- Essential early crafts:
- Scrapper tool (for dismantling robots).
- Small storage (placed inside train) to free inventory space.
- Small isotope tank (crafted from plates, pipes, bolts) to store collected isotopes for glider fuel and chemical recipes.
- Healing stims (if recipe available).
- Train management: Keep the battery charged by moving at optimal speed (green zone). Avoid long stops. Use the map legend to identify POI types: rations (three triangles), scrap metal, tech, etc.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Letting the train battery die: The battery drains while stationary. If it reaches zero, the train explodes and the run ends. Always leave enough charge to move to the next POI or to give the team time to return.
- Overstaying at a POI: The timer is real. Even if you are still looting, you must return. Estimate 2–3 minutes for a small facility, 5–6 for larger ones. Use the in-game timer that appears when you leave the train.
- Ignoring food management: Passengers eat automatically from the food depot. If the depot is empty, they starve. Check the depot regularly and deposit rations.
- Not crafting a glider early: The glider greatly improves scouting and isotope collection. Without it, you can’t scan ahead effectively and miss valuable resources.
- Solo driving while crafting: You cannot eat or craft while in the driver’s seat. You have to exit the cockpit (F) to do those actions. Plan stops or have a teammate drive while you handle interior tasks.
- Crashing the glider: Glider controls are sensitive (W for up/down, camera may be inverted). Crashes kill you and cost a passenger. Practice in safe areas before using it near POIs.
Advanced Tips for Experienced Players
- Use track switches efficiently: The world is a loop (based on early footage). You can choose left or right branches to reach different POIs. Study the map to plan shorter routes to high-value locations (tech or food).
- EMP weapons are mandatory for shielded enemies: Turrets and shielded robots ignore regular bullets. Craft the EMP pistol at the weapon fabricator (requires sto parts) and keep an EMP weapon equipped for those encounters.
- Optimize train speed for recharge: Faster speed = faster battery recharge, but beware of derailment risk on curves. On straight sections, push up to 300 km/h (green zone). Slow down when the derailment warning shows red.
- Multiplayer division of labor: While one player drives, another can craft items at the synthesizer (which consumes train power; watch power drain). A third can scout with the glider. Coordinate with voice chat for maximum efficiency.
- Stockpile scrap metal: It is the most used resource for synthesizer recipes (ammo, plates, barrels, etc.). Break down all dead robots with the scrapper tool. Craft extra scrapper tools when the current one breaks.
- Rescue multiple survivors: Cryopods found in facilities can be hacked (use hacking kit) to free new passengers. More passengers mean more lives, but also more food consumption. Balance food stock and passenger count.
