How to Master EverRail Passenger Survival: Permadeath, Feeding & Rescue
Learn the passenger survival system in EverRail: manage hunger, avoid permadeath, rescue survivors, and keep your train moving. Step-by-step guide with common mistakes.
Overview
In EverRail, the passenger manifest is not just a score – it’s your life counter. Every time you die while exploring on foot, you respawn as another passenger on the train. Lose all passengers, and the run ends permanently. This guide explains how the passenger survival system works, how to keep your crew fed, how to rescue new survivors, and what to do when you fail. By the end, you’ll have a repeatable routine that minimizes passenger loss and keeps your journey rolling.
What this guide covers:
• How the permadeath successor mechanic works
• Feeding passengers – the food depot and rations system
• Rescuing frozen colonists with hacking kits
• What to do after a character death
• Common mistakes and advanced tips for long-term survival
Requirements
Before you can effectively manage passengers, you need:
- Train with an active battery – The train must be moving to recharge. If the battery dies, the train explodes and you lose all passengers.
- Food depot module – Installed in one of your train cars. This is where passengers draw rations from.
- Rations – Any green food item (field rations, rations) that you place into the food depot. Passengers consume one ration per distribution cycle.
- Hacking kits (Level 1 or higher) – Required to open cryopods and free trapped colonists. Kits are found in loot containers or crafted.
- Scrapper tool – Used to dismantle robots for parts (scrap metal, tech). Has limited durability – craft a spare.
- Exo suit – Automatically equipped when you leave the train. Protects against cold and allows combat.
Note: All mechanics described are based on the public demo and press materials as of July 2026. Full release may adjust values.
The Passenger Permadeath System Explained
When your character dies during an expedition (from combat, cold, falling, etc.), the game does not reload a save. Instead, you immediately take control of another passenger from the manifest. The deceased passenger is permanently removed from the game. This is known as a successor system – you continue playing as long as at least one passenger remains.
Key points from the evidence:
- Death = loss of a passenger. You will “become a passenger” (i.e., respawn as one of the survivors on the train).
- No revival. That character is gone for good.
- The run ends only when the last soul perishes. If your manifest hits zero, it’s game over.
- You can recruit new passengers by rescuing colonists from cryopods found in facilities.
➡ Your primary goal: Keep the passenger count above zero. Every death matters.
How to Feed Your Passengers
Passengers get hungry on a timer. If the food depot runs out of rations, they will starve – and you can lose passengers that way.
Step-by-step feeding routine
- Open the food depot – It’s a module you can place in any train car. Look for a container labeled “Food Depot” on your train.
- Transfer rations from your inventory – Open your inventory (hotbar), drag rations into the food depot. You can also deposit field rations and other green food items.
- Monitor the passenger hunger UI – At the top of your screen, you’ll see “Rations: X/100” and “Passenger: Y/8”. The number indicates how many rations are in the depot and how many passengers are alive.
- Notice the consumption rate – In the demo, passengers ate roughly 7 rations every 4 minutes. Keep the depot stocked.
- Eat for yourself separately – Your character also gets hungry. Use rations from your hotbar to restore hunger and health. You cannot feed yourself from the depot while driving – you must exit the cockpit to eat.
Pro tip: Always have a few rations in your personal inventory for healing during fights. But prioritize keeping the depot full over your own stash.
How to Rescue New Passengers
You replenish your passenger count by finding and freeing colonists frozen in cryopods. These pods are located inside facilities (marked as POIs on the map).
Rescue procedure
- Equip a hacking kit – Place it in your hotbar. You need at least a Level 1 hacking kit.
- Locate a cryopod – Look for pods that glow or are interactable. They are often in locked rooms or after clearing enemies.
- Use the hacking kit – Interact with the pod. A short animation plays, and a colonist is freed.
- The new passenger joins your manifest – You do not need to escort them back to the train; they are automatically added.
- Repeat – Each facility may hold multiple pods. Rescue as many as you can before your battery timer runs out.
Evidence note: The press release states “rescue survivors” is part of expedition gameplay. The video shows a colonist being hacked free and automatically joining the train.
Step-by-Step Survival Loop (Executable Sequence)
Here’s the recommended cycle that balances exploration, resource gathering, and passenger safety:
Phase 1: Depart the Facility (Start of Run)
- Complete the tutorial objectives.
- Board the train. Set speed to around 200–300 km/h to recharge the battery.
- While moving, craft essential modules: Food Depot, Small Storage, Weapon Fabricator, Glider Fabricator (once you have parts).
Phase 2: Maintain the Train While Moving
- Check the battery charge – aim for 100% before stopping.
- Keep train integrity in the green (avoid exceeding speed limit on curves – derailment damages the train).
- Monitor passenger hunger – deposit rations if the depot is low.
Phase 3: Choose a POI to Stop At
- Use the map to find facilities with high-value icons: food, tech, or question marks (unknown, often contain cryopods).
- Decide based on your immediate needs: food shortage = rations POI; passenger count low = rescue POI.
Phase 4: Stop the Train and Disembark
- Apply brakes (press Q three times to fully release after stopping).
- The timer starts: you have a limited time before the battery drains and the train explodes. In the demo, the timer was about 12 minutes.
- Exit the cockpit. Your exo suit automatically equips.
Phase 5: Loot, Fight, Rescue
- Primary objective: Find cryopods and hack them to add passengers.
- Secondary: Collect rations, scrap metal, tech, ammo, wiring, bolts, isotopes.
- Combat: Use standard ammo for most enemies. Shielded enemies require EMP weapons (craft at weapon fabricator).
- Cold management: Spend too long outside and you take damage. Craft warming consumables if available (not seen in demo, but UI hint exists).
- Scrapper durability: It breaks after ~8–10 dismantles. Carry a spare or craft a new one at the synthesizer.
Phase 6: Return to the Train Before Battery Dies
- Keep an eye on the battery timer (shown on HUD). In the demo, you had 6–12 minutes depending on distance from train.
- Leave the facility early if you’re far from the train. Losing the train means losing all passengers.
- Once aboard, set speed to recharge immediately.
Phase 7: Recovery After a Death
- You will respawn as a different passenger. Your inventory is lost? (The video suggests you do not carry over items – the player respawned in the train with a new exo suit and minimal gear).
- Check the passenger count. If you are low, prioritize rescuing more colonists on your next stop.
- Re-craft any essential tools (scrapper, hacking kit) using the synthesizer or fabricators.
Recommended Setup & Resources
Early in the game, focus on these modules and items:
| Module / Item | Purpose | How to Get |
|---|---|---|
| Food Depot | Feeds passengers | Build with building tool (requires plates, pipes, bolts) |
| Small Storage | Store excess items | Build with slots |
| Synthesizer | Craft ammo, parts, tools | Already on train; uses energy and scrap metal |
| Weapon Fabricator | Craft weapons (incl. EMP) | Build with building tool |
| Glider Fabricator | Craft glider for aerial scouting | Build later; requires plates, bolts |
| Hacking Kit | Rescue colonists | Found in loot or crafted (requires tech?) |
| Scrapper Tool | Dismantle robots | Craft at synthesizer – needs wiring bundle and scrap metal |
| Standard Ammo | Basic weapon ammo | Craft at synthesizer – 20 rounds for scrap metal |
| EMP Pistol (STO-1) | Breaks shields | Craft at weapon fabricator after building it |
Common Mistakes (and How to Fix Them)
Mistake 1: Running Out of Rations
- Sign: Passenger count drops suddenly.
- Fix: Always leave the train with a small stash of rations for yourself, but keep the depot topped off. Before a long expedition, deposit at least 20–30 rations.
Mistake 2: Letting the Battery Die While Exploring
- Sign: Timer appears and you’re far from the train.
- Fix: Never wander beyond visual range of the train. Use the minimap. When the timer shows 5 minutes, head back immediately.
Mistake 3: Dying with No Passengers Left
- Sign: You die and the screen goes to game over.
- Fix: Avoid unnecessary combat early on. Use cover and headshots. If your passenger count is 1 or 2, play extremely conservatively – do not engage shielded enemies until you have EMP weapons.
Mistake 4: Forgetting to Craft Spares
- Sign: Scrapper breaks mid-dismantle.
- Fix: Always have a second scrapper in your inventory. Craft a few at the synthesizer before leaving.
Mistake 5: Misjudging the Derailment Zone
- Sign: Train takes damage, battery drains faster.
- Fix: Slow down before curves. The speed limit drops sharply – keep your speed in the green zone on the gauge.
Advanced Tips for Long-Term Survival
- Use the glider for reconnaissance: Once you build the glider fabricator and a basic glider (Scrap Gull), scout ahead for high-value POIs. The glider also collects isotopes (purple wisps) that are used for energy and crafting.
- Prioritize isotope storage: Build a Small Isotank early – isotopes are used in advanced crafting (laboratory recipes). They also store extra energy.
- Stack your train cars: You can build multiple cars to increase storage and functional modules. The more cars, the more space for depots and fabricators.
- Learn enemy types: Basic bipedal robots and spider-bots are weak. Shielded enemies and turrets resist regular bullets; craft EMP weapons at the weapon fabricator before tackling tech-focused POIs.
- Manage crafting energy: The synthesizer and fabricators consume train battery power while running. If you’re low on battery, stop crafting and only resume after recharging.
- Rescue as many as you can early: Your passenger count acts as an extra life pool. Aim to have at least 5 passengers before taking on high-risk expeditions.
