EverRail Train Management Guide – Keep Your Mobile Base Running
Master energy, passengers, and expeditions in EverRail. Step-by-step guide to keep your train moving, batteries charged, and survivors alive.
Overview
In EverRail, your train is both a mobile base and your only lifeline. The core rule is simple: the train’s battery recharges while it moves and drains when it stands still. Let the battery hit zero and the containment field collapses — the train explodes and your run ends. Passengers must be fed, the train must be repaired, and expeditions must be timed around your energy budget.
Outcome of a well-managed train: You never run out of power, passengers stay fed, your base constantly expands with new wagons and facilities, and you can recover from setbacks (death, derailment, low resources) without losing the whole run.
Requirements
- Train: You start with one locomotive and a few basic wagons. Later you can attach hundreds more.
- Passengers: You begin with 7–8 survivors. Each death in the field costs one passenger (you respawn as another). Rescue more from cryopods and facilities.
- Basic tools: Scrapper (dismantles robots for parts), hacking kit (opens locked doors/chests), standard pistol.
- Resources to track: Scrap metal, bolts, wiring bundles, plates, isotopes, rations, ammo, and train power (kW).
- Cockpit controls: W (accelerate), S (brake/reverse), Q (apply/release brakes in three stages), A/D (switch tracks at junctions), F (exit seat).
Step-by-Step Train Management Sequence
1. Master the Energy Loop
- Keep moving to charge the battery. The faster you go, the faster energy restores — but stay within the speed limit shown on the gauge.
- Watch the derailment zone: On curves, the safe speed drops sharply. Exceeding it damages the train (reduces integrity). Slow down before entering a curve.
- When stopped: A timer appears (e.g., 12 minutes). The battery drains until it reaches zero. Plan your expeditions to return well before the timer expires.
2. Manage Passenger Hunger
- Check the food depot (located inside one of your wagons). Passengers eat one ration per distribution cycle (shown as “7 rations in 4 minutes” on screen).
- Stock the depot from your inventory. Rations are found in facilities or crafted at the synthesizer.
- If food runs out, passengers starve and die. Keep at least 60–70 rations in the depot at all times.
3. Conduct Expeditions Efficiently
- Wait until battery is full before stopping at a POI. That gives you the maximum safe time away from the train.
- Exit the cockpit — your exosuit automatically equips. Take a weapon, scrapper, hacking kit, and healing items.
- Prioritize loot that solves immediate problems: rations, scrap metal, isotopes, ammo, and tech components.
- Watch the time displayed on the HUD while you explore. Head back when 3–4 minutes remain.
- Return to the vicinity of the train and hit F to board. You can board while the train is moving.
4. Craft and Expand While Traveling
- Use the synthesizer to craft basic components (plates, pipes, wiring bundles, standard ammo). Each recipe consumes power (kW) and takes time.
- Build new modules with the building tool: small storage, weapon fabricator, iso tank, glider fabricator, glider loadout station.
- Place modules on free wagon slots. Use the building tool’s snap points to avoid blocking elevators or doors.
- Balance power usage: Heavy crafting while driving can slow charging. Keep power draw in the green zone.
5. Handle Failures Gracefully
- If you die in the field: A passenger takes your place. You lose that passenger permanently. Immediate recovery: get back on the train, check your passenger count, and plan a rescue mission soon.
- If the train takes damage (derailment, overheating): Repair stations exist in some facilities. You can also craft repair kits at the synthesizer (not shown in the demo but implied by the system).
- If battery is critically low: Stop all crafting, reduce speed to just above zero? (slowest possible), and wait for it to recharge a few units, then move again.
Common Mistakes
| Mistake | Consequence | How to Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Stopping for too long without a full battery | Train explodes when battery hits zero | Always leave a 3‑minute buffer on the timer |
| Ignoring passenger hunger | Passengers starve and die; fewer lives | Check food depot every few stops; keep 60+ rations |
| Not slowing down on curves | Derailment – train integrity takes damage | Watch the red “derailment zone” and brake before turns |
| Crafting heavy items while battery is low | Power deficit slows charging and may damage systems | Craft only when battery is above 70%, or pause crafting during recharge |
| Leaving train without a scrapper or hacking kit | Cannot open locked containers or dismantle robots | Keep at least one spare scrapper and one hacking kit in inventory |
| Using regular weapons on shielded enemies | Weapons deal minimal damage; you waste ammo | Craft an EMP pistol at the weapon fabricator (requires pistol barrel + frame made at synthesizer) |
Advanced Tips
- Glider fundamentals: Build the glider fabricator and loadout station. Launch only on straight, open track. Keep altitude; the glider has its own battery. The camera is inverted (W = descend, S = ascend). Collect purple wisps (isotopes) to fuel chemistry crafting.
- Isotope storage: Build a small iso tank early. Isotopes are used for energy storage and laboratory recipes. They do not fit in regular storage, so a dedicated tank is essential.
- Use the free camera (C) while driving to inspect surroundings and upcoming POIs. The minimap legend shows icons: triangles for rations, circles for tech, etc. – but loot placement can be misleading, so always enter facilities.
- Multiplayer tips: Assign roles – one driver, one crafter, one scavenger. The train’s power and food demands scale with player count (same as passenger count).
- Track management: Press A or D at junction indicators to choose the direction. The map is a continuous loop? The demo suggests you can circle indefinitely, but later biomes may branch.
- Recovering lost passengers: When passenger count drops, prioritize stopping at POIs that contain cryopods (the exit facility usually has one). Use a hacking kit (level 1 is enough for demo cryopods) to free a survivor.
